Final Fantasy Resonance launches with HD-2D battles, Cloud, Tidus and a new Vision system
Final Fantasy Resonance launched on October 22, 2026, bringing turn-based battles, iconic characters and HD-2D visuals to PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series and PC. A free demo is also available, with progress transferable to the full game.
Final Fantasy Resonance makes an unmistakable appeal to players who enjoy the series' older combat systems. Characters move according to a visible turn order, elemental weaknesses can change the flow of a battle, and familiar heroes return as powerful sources of abilities.
The game is not an entirely new story. Square Enix has extensively rebuilt the opening narrative of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, transforming the former mobile adventure into a larger console-oriented RPG.
Its HD-2D presentation combines traditional pixel art with modern environmental rendering and cinematics.
Turn order becomes a strategic resource
Combat uses traditional commands supported by a timeline displaying the upcoming actions of party members and enemies. Players can anticipate dangerous attacks and decide when to spend resources or prepare defensive abilities.
The Stagger Gauge adds another consideration. Exploiting elemental weaknesses helps deplete this gauge, leaving enemies temporarily unable to act and reducing their defenses.
Staggering a target grants a bonus action. When every enemy is staggered, Sweeping Stagger activates and gives the entire party an additional opportunity to act.

That makes timing and elemental preparation important. A powerful attack is not necessarily the best choice if another action can interrupt an enemy's turn and create an opportunity for the whole party.
Learning abilities from the past
Visions represent the abilities and memories of characters encountered throughout the adventure, including heroes from earlier Final Fantasy games.
Equipping a Vision grants access to abilities that can be learned through combat. Certain unlocked abilities remain available when changing Visions, provided they fit within the character's equipment cost limit.
Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light are among the announced characters. Sephiroth also appears as an optional challenge, with a special reward available to players who defeat him.
Resonance abilities provide powerful special attacks during bonus phases, adding another layer to the Stagger system.
Summons and optional challenges
Espers are active participants in combat. Once summoned, they remain alongside the party for three turns before performing a finishing attack.
Square Enix has also confirmed a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and an optional Ultima Weapon encounter.
These challenges give players additional opportunities to experiment with party compositions and learned abilities beyond the main storyline.

Returning to the world of Grandshelt
Rain and Lasswell begin their journey by investigating a weakened magical barrier protecting the Earth Shrine. Their encounter with Veritas of the Dark ends with the destruction of the Earth Crystal and sets a larger conflict in motion.
Joined by the mysterious Fina, the two knights travel to protect the remaining Crystals and confront the forces threatening their world.
The game includes airships, chocobos and familiar Final Fantasy themes, with cinematic pixel-art techniques used for its animated sequences.

A free demo includes the complete first chapter, estimated by Square Enix at roughly three to five hours. Save data carries over to the full game.
Final Fantasy Resonance is available on PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its listed US Standard Edition price is $49.99, with additional editions available.
