Metro Redux gets free 4K and 120 FPS upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received free next-generation upgrades on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Available since October 29, 2026, the updates introduce native 4K at 60 FPS, an upscaled 4K option targeting 120 FPS, improved lighting and several platform-specific features.
Artyom is returning to the tunnels of Moscow, this time with a substantial technical overhaul.
Developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver have released the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The October 29 console launch covers both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux.
PC users received the update on October 22 through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, with the Windows Store version following the console release schedule.
The upgrade is free for most existing owners, although PLAION warns that some versions may not qualify.
Two graphics modes targeting up to 120 FPS
The main improvement concerns performance on modern consoles.
4A Games advertises native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside an alternative mode that targets 120 frames per second using an upscaled 4K image.
A compatible television or monitor is required to experience the higher refresh rate.
Native 4K and upscaled 4K are not equivalent rendering methods, and the difference remains important when comparing the two modes.
Detailed Xbox notes identify 120 FPS support for Series X. They do not establish identical rendering targets for Series S.
The published figures describe developer targets rather than independently measured frame-rate consistency.
More detailed environments and improved lighting
The update includes far more than increased resolution.
Higher-quality textures, additional geometric detail and improved materials are among the announced changes.
Lighting and shadows have also been refined, particularly important in games where long sections take place in dark underground tunnels.
Particle effects, character animations and several post-processing systems receive improvements.

4A Games says the goal is to modernize the experience while preserving the visual identity of the original Redux releases.
The environments are intended to remain recognizably Metro, rather than adopting a completely different artistic direction.
PlayStation and Xbox receive specific enhancements
The new versions include features designed around each platform's hardware.
On PlayStation 5, DualSense adaptive triggers add tactile feedback to selected actions.
The PlayStation 5 Pro version supports Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology.
On Xbox Series X, 4A Games provides its 4A TSR reconstruction and anti-aliasing system.
Xbox controller Impulse Triggers are supported, along with spatial audio.
The update also introduces Xbox Play Anywhere compatibility and optimizations for Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld devices.
PC improvements include DLSS support, uncapped frame rates and fixes addressing problems reported by the community.
Longstanding bugs are being addressed
The official patch notes contain numerous stability and quality-of-life fixes.
These include problems affecting chapter transitions, game saves and Quick Resume.
The developers have also addressed cases where enemies detected players through walls or behaved incorrectly in darkness.
Metro 2033 Redux receives fixes for several scripted sequences, creature encounters and progression blockers.
Metro: Last Light Redux also benefits from corrections to combat interactions and specific story chapters.
These changes are intended to make the existing campaigns more reliable on modern hardware.
An important save-game warning
Players upgrading through the Microsoft Store should take particular care.
According to the published patch notes, previous saves do not carry over to the upgraded version.
Starting a new game is recommended.
Chapter selection will be available, with predefined equipment for individual chapters.
The limitation should not automatically be assumed to apply to every PC or PlayStation installation.
Players should verify the upgrade conditions associated with their particular copy before removing an existing installation.
Not a remake or a new remaster
PLAION's official FAQ makes a clear distinction.
The Next-Gen Update is not a remake or an entirely new remaster of Metro Redux.
The games have not been rebuilt using the latest version of the 4A Engine.
Ray tracing has not been added either, as the developer says the work required would involve a substantially deeper technical overhaul.
Both games retain their established campaigns, stories and fundamental mechanics.
The changes instead focus on presentation, performance, compatibility and reliability.

Returning to the story before Metro 2039
Metro 2033 follows Artyom through the remains of Moscow after a nuclear catastrophe forces survivors underground.
Metro: Last Light continues the story, exploring conflicts between human factions and the dangers of the ruined world.
Both games combine first-person combat, stealth and survival systems in environments built around scarcity and tension.
The Redux editions include the two campaigns and their associated additional content.
The new update arrives ahead of Metro 2039, currently announced for February 4, 2027.
That is a separate upcoming installment, not additional story content for the Redux games.
PLAION has also reported that the Metro franchise has surpassed 50 million copies sold worldwide.
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux received their new console versions on October 29, with regional availability potentially varying. For eligible owners, the update offers a way to revisit the series' origins without purchasing another edition.
